EVAULATION QUESTION:
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
CONVENTIONS DEVELOPED
While doing the three different tasks; Music video, Digipak cover, and Digipak Poster I have developed on some of the conventions traditionally used in the Indie Pop Genre.
While producing my ancillary products, I challenged quite a few different conventions are the commonly used by other artists in the Indie Pop genre. For example, for my digipak poster i decided to portray my artist with the theme of the narrative rather than him as himself. This meant that I was able to choose a design that can be recognised as the artists brand and that can stand out over other artists in the genre, while still appealing to the target audience. I also chose to rely more on the illustration/design aspect of my digipak poster and cover. Traditionally, most artist and bands choose to have an medium shot/ close up of their band or artist and neatly display important text around them. I decided to follow that to an extend by instead of a traditional picture, i went with an image that portrays my artist in a distressed mood. This helps give the album as a whole a clear identity and theme.
My choice in logo design was decided by asking a range of people to fill out a survey and to pick the one they thought was best. this resulted in logo shown beneath. This logo is a quite original design and stands out from any other artist from the Indie Pop genre. Its original design and linear style makes is work well with my other ancillary tasks as it can easily be added in. It suits our artists image due to its bold distorted style.
Additionally, the bold black banner I used to border the digipak poster allow me to frame the image of the artist, which essentially make draws the audiences attention to the centre of the poster where the important information is. There are not a lot of other artist that make use of framing with their posters.
During production of our music video, we developed a lot on the editing and how many different camera angles we used in oder to make our artist the main focus. We avoided repeating the same camera and over and over again by recording a wide range during filming. We also mixed it with a lot of camera movement, which gives the views a much boarder range of view points. This allowed us to not have a repetitive music video, but also for out music video to flow better between the narrative and performance aspects.
Moreover, our narrative is a development from traditional relationship narratives that are commonly portrayed in the Indie Pop genre music videos. We developed it by editing it in an unorthodox style where it become clear to the audience over time by watching the video and listening to the lyrics. We were able to achieve this style of editing by have a range of different locations, costumes, and overall footage, which allowed us to haver a lot of content to play around with and have the chance to create a fast cutting style edit what doesn't get boring.
